The primary function of the Sauk County Historical
Society's (SCHS) Museum Keeper is to facilitate public access to the SCHS's
museum, also known as the Van Orden Mansion, during the 16 hours per week that
the building is open to the public.This
position will also provide basic office and clerical support for the functions
of the SCHS.
Work Hours:
20 hours per week. Regular hours of 11:30 am to 4:30 pm during
the SCHS business days of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.The employee may be asked to work additional weekend
and evening hours as needed for museum scheduling and events. Any additional hours will be based on SCHS
program needs and available funding.
Compensation:
$9.00 per hour.The employee will be paid for the hours actually worked.There is no paid leave time provided with
this position.
Supervision:
The employee will report to the SCHS Personnel Committee
which is chaired by the SCHS Board President.The employee will also work under the guidance of the appropriate
committees of the SCHS Board of Directors.The employee's work will be coordinated with, but not supervised by, the SCHS's Collections and Program Manager
who will serve as the lead worker of the SCHS employees.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Museum
Operations -- 35%
A.Open and close Van Orden Mansion on schedule
B.Greet visitors to the museum and direct them
to exhibits
C.Encourage visitors to become members of the
SCHS
D.Assist researchers with basic request, refer
advanced request to volunteer reseachers
2.Office
Functions -- 25%
A.Answer phone during open hours
B.Distribute incoming mail, e-mail, and phone
messages to appropriate staff, Board Members, and volunteers
C.Record incoming membership applications and
renewals
D.Initial processing of incoming
archive/artifact donations in absence of Collections and Program Manager
E.Assist with mailing of bi-monthly newsletters
F.Provide monthly report to Personnel Committee
3.Merchandise
Sales -- 10%
A.Handle sales of merchandise to museum
visitors
B.Maintain records of all sales
C.Maintain inventory of merchandise
D.Provide sales records and payments to
Bookkeeper
4.Cleaning and
Maintenance -- 10%
A.Perform basic cleaning of public areas of the
museum, exhibits, bathroom and porch.
B.Report any major cleaning and/or maintenance
need to Collections and Program Manager or President
5.Volunteer
Coordination -- 10%
A.Train volunteers for museum related tasks
B.Work to recruit and maintain volunteers
6.Public Events --
10%
A.Maintain reservations list for attendees of
special events
B.Record payments for event reservations and
provide payments to Bookkeeper
C.Assist in publicity and execution of events
as requested
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Working knowledge of basic office computer programs and
office equipment.
Ability to work independently, but with direction from a
variety of sources. Interest and knowledge of Sauk County History.
