How Does Our Garden Grow

Once again the Society has planted a garden next to the Van Orden mansion. While the garden size remains the same, we are expanding our crops. Last year we emphasized the Victory Garden to coincide with our theme of Sauk County at War. This year, we are emphasizing the variety of vegetables a small home plot can produce to fit our theme of At Home in Sauk County.  One the best ways to do this is through the Square Foot Gardening method made popular by Mel Bartholomew in 1981. Mr. Bartholomew is a self-taught gardener who developed a way of gardening that is suited to smaller spaces. By dividing your garden in square foot sections and planting one crop in each square foot, you can increase your yields while decreasing your work.

This year we planted 15 different vegetables along with flowers in each corner of our garden and with some luck and good weather, we will once again be sharing our harvest with the food pantry here in Sauk County.

If you want to see how our garden grows, stop by the museum throughout the summer or check our website for updates.

5-19-10 Gave up on seeds (I planted them too deep), bought pre-grown plants
May 6, 2010 - Garden is planted, fenced in to keep out critters, and sprinkled to germinate the seeds.
