The Ochsner Park & Zoo is a 26 acre park that houses a two acre free zoo.
Brown Capuchin Monkey
This small, intelligent primate eats plants and animals. Capuchins are tree dwellers and use their tails for balance. They live in troops of up to 20, lead by a dominate male. They originate in tropical forests of S. America. They can live from 35 to 50 years. They eat fruits, vegetables, meats, and eggs.
White-Tailed Deer
These common cervids are herbivores (eat plants). Bucks grow and shed antlers of bone every year. Deer flash, or flag, their distinct white fur under the tail to warn of danger. They can run 40 miles per hour and jump 10 feet. They can live 5-15 years. They eat hay, mixed grains, and apples.
Bobcat
The most common wild cat, this carnivore (meat eater) is
very territorial and marks its area with urine sprays, droppings and scrapings.
This feline is named for its stubby and bobbed tail. They can live 20 to 30
years.
American Black Bear
Smallest bear in North America. It is the only large omnivore
(eats plants & animals). Bears walk
flatfooted like humans. They are good tree climbers and can run up to 30 miles
per hour. They can live 18 to 30 years.His name is Bug-A-Boo.
Llama
Yoda is a male llama. His haircoat is brown and white.
Pot-bellied Pig
The pot-bellied
pig is a breed of domesticated pig originating in Vietnam with fourteen
sub-species. Considerably smaller than standard American or European farm pigs,
most adult pot-bellied pigs are about the size of a medium or large-breed dog,
though their bodies are denser at a weight of 60 to 300 lbs.
Black-Tailed Prairie Dog
Prairie Dogs are plant eaters and are related to ground squirrels. Town members communicate with various whistles, squeaks, calls and body postures. These rodents are named for their dog-like bark. They can live 4-8 years, and eat hay and corn.
